The 2024 Ram Dakota is making a comeback! Just like the Dodge Dakota of yore, this all-new model will be a midsize truck. It will be perfectly suited for drivers who want to spend less than they would on a full-size model but still enjoy all the benefits of a pickup truck. Here’s a look at what we know so far.
Is Ram really bringing back the Dakota?
Rumors of a renewed Dakota have been swirling for quite some time, but it does indeed look as if Ram has plans for a new midsize truck. However, the automaker has yet to make an official announcement about a redesigned Dakota.
The original midsize Dodge Dakota officially retired after the 2010 model year, just before Ram became its own brand. However, renewed interest in smaller, more efficient trucks no doubt has Ram thinking about how they can retool the Dakota for modern drivers.
What will power the 2024 Ram Dakota?
Since Ram has yet to make an official announcement about the rumored Dakota, we can really only guess what will be under its hood. However, we’d bet on a V6. Perhaps the upcoming Dakota will feature the same 3.6-liter V6 that Fiat Chrysler uses in its lineup. If that’s the case, the Dakota will likely pair it with an eight-speed automatic transmission to send power to the rear wheels. And, of course, sporty four-wheel drive will be optional.
Since drivers these days prefer to pair roguish capabilities with decent fuel economy, the Dakota may also offer the diesel 3.0-liter V6 engine. With 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, it would represent a great way to maximize towing capabilities without forcing drivers to pay too much at the pump.
While we don’t know for sure how much the 2024 Ram Dakota will be able to tow or haul, we can make some guesses based on other midsize trucks. To stay competitive, the Dakota will likely need to be able to tow 7,500 pounds and haul 1,600 pounds, approximately.
Which features will be available for the 2024 Ram Dakota?
Inside, the midsize Dakota will likely have a lot in common with the full-size Ram 1500 cabin, from styling elements to tech features. Like its fellow midsize trucks, however, the Dakota probably won’t offer as many luxury options as bigger trucks. Of course, you’ll still be able to pick up plenty of comfort features, such as leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
How much will the 2024 Ram Dakota cost?
Again, we can’t say for sure — at least not yet. But to compete in the midsize segment, the Dakota will likely have an MSRP around $30,000.
